Why chose Derby Rowing Club

Membership at Derby is a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Our members share life experiences and regards each other as extended family.

Learning to row builds character, improves self confidence and teaches you to become a real team player.

So how do we do it?

We have two routes of entry into Derby Rowing Club for beginners; via one of our learn to row courses or via a taster session.

We run courses for juniors (12 and over) and adults throughout the year. Our water courses are limited to the British Summertime months for safety reasons. The courses involve a combination of water sessions and land-based activity within our boathouse. During the course, on land you will complete circuit training and learning basic technique on one of our many indoor rowing machines. You’ll then transition to the water: combining a mixture of sculling and sweep-oar rowing.

During the course, our expert coaches will teach you all you need to know regarding the handling of a boat, and water safety on the River Derwent. You will start in recreational boats that are stabilised by floats and this will aid you to develop your technique. As your confidence grows, you will have the opportunity to transition in ‘finer boats’. Our aim is that all learn to row participants are able to row safely and with confidence.

Our courses are planned and conducted by professionally qualified coaches, the sessions will be altered to meet needs and abilities.

  • A learn to row program set by professionally qualified coaches, with a particular focus in coaching beginner athletes
  • A friendly, approachable, community-spirited club that will welcome you with open arms

After completing our Learn to Row course you may wish to join the club as a full member as part of our many squads – ranging from competitive to recreational rowers. The opportunities are endless at Derby Rowing Club and our captains and coaching team will support you with the integration into the club.

Learn to Row courses aren’t for everyone and many members like to try their hand at the sport before committing to a full course. New for 2021, we are offering free of charge taster sessions to all individuals (12 and over). Our taster sessions, typically held on a weekend at midday provide the opportunity to get in a recreational single scull and experience the best of on the water rowing.

If you are interested in taking rowing further post-taster session, we would recommend joining one of our next learn to row courses, or we can analyse a straight integration into one of our many squads.
